The (Harsh) Reality of Rejections and Job Hunting

A few weeks ago I sat on a panel for a migrant job seeker event, and one thing came up that I could not stop thinking about. Talented people, graduates and experienced migrants alike, applying to hundreds of roles and hearing almost nothing back. Not rejections. Silence. And it is not just them. Right now that is most of the market.

Someone asked if there was a silver bullet. There is not, and I would not insult you by pretending otherwise. But there is a way to come through this without it breaking you, and there are things that genuinely tilt the odds. Let me start with the part nobody says out loud.

The cycle is exhausting, and it is not in your head

Here is what the search actually feels like right now:

• You spend hours tailoring a resume and cover letter, and hear nothing.
• You network until you are tired of your own voice, chasing the one warm lead.
• You get ghosted mid-process. No reply, no reason.
• You prep hard for an interview that gets cancelled last minute, or where the interviewer never shows.
• You get your hopes up about a real opportunity, and it evaporates with no explanation.

If that is your week, you are not failing and you are not alone. With rejection emails that carry no feedback, it is almost impossible not to feel like you are running in circles. That feeling is a normal response to a genuinely brutal process, not a sign something is wrong with you.

Sometimes the rejection is saving you

Let me tell you about a friend of mine, a machine learning engineer. For two years she chased four companies she desperately wanted, and got knocked back by all of them. Worse, each one told her she came second. That stings in a specific way.

Looking back, she is grateful she missed every one. Two of those startups had major layoffs not long after, and she would have been among the first cut. Another dissolved its entire data team. The fourth turned out to have a culture people were fleeing. She has now spent nearly two years somewhere that values her and gives her room to grow.

The lesson is not "everything happens for a reason," which is the kind of thing people say to fill a silence. It is narrower and more useful: a "no" you cannot see the inside of is often protecting you from something you could not see either. You rarely get to learn that in the moment. Sometimes you get to learn it later.

What actually moves the needle

Rejection is not proof you are unqualified. While you ride it out, these are the things worth your energy:

1. Tailor every application. Match the resume to the role and lead with the relevant wins. Generic applications get generic silence.
2. Make your LinkedIn match your resume. Employers cross-check. If you are technical, point to a repo or a portfolio.
3. Work your network. Most roles move through people. The warm introduction beats the cold application nearly every time.
4. Be persistent, but aim. Keep going, but go narrow. A handful of well-targeted applications with a real follow-up beats fifty fired into the void.
5. Ask for feedback. Not everyone replies, but the ones who do can hand you the exact fix for next time.
6. Protect yourself. This drains people. Step back when you need to. You make worse decisions and worse impressions when you are running on empty.

You are not the pile

It is easy, after enough silence, to start feeling like just another resume in a stack. You are not. The impersonal machinery of the job market is not a measure of your worth, and you should not let it become one. You are skilled and worth respect whether or not the market is reflecting that this month.

The search right now is hard. You are harder. Keep learning, keep adjusting, and keep your sense of yourself intact, because the next door that opens will need you to walk through it like someone who knows what they are worth.
